RACE 3 :  into the flood disaster

0ºC

Breda, the Netherlands,
Today we cycle into the flood disaster, because finish place Venray is in the north of Limburg, not far from the Maas river.
There it is not so extreme bad as in the south of Limburg + big parts of Belgium and Germany.
For now ; the current situation is that the dikes will hold near Venray, and just the outer areas are evacuated.
I wish all the best to all people who are affected by this extreme flood disaster.

About the race ; well, as everyone knows it will be a lottery, and the storm makes it even more unpredictable.
Despite this, the mission will be to try to get the very first NT race top 10 result of Jasper Blair.

So far the "NT palmares" of the Australian Bullet are bad, and he was the teamcaptain everytime ;
season 17 = zero points ( 18º Pierre and 20º Hamsten ; they saved the Australian honor by scoring 40 points )
season 16 = zero points
season 15 sprint race 3 = 15º ( 70 points )
season 15 sprint race 6 = 17º ( 40 points )
season 14 = 11º ( with mechanical breakdown in the crucial s5 ; and 19º Pierre ; what makes a total of 130 points )
So, this bad luck race is even his best NT result, when Jasper Blair was just 24yo.

We have to go back to season 12 to see the last Australian top 10 result in a NT sprint race ;
season 13 = 18º Nelson ( 30 points )
season 12 = Nelson ( 140 points )

Hopefully this season a top 10 result of Jasper Blair. I guess he needs a lot of luck to achieve that.
And maybe it is possible to score a few extra points due to the active double weather icons** of 4 Australians.
The 8 best sprinters are selected, added with 21yo sprint-toptalent Jasper Caan.

Australia NT selection :

Jasper Blair ( 28 ) Manicomicos_Cycling_Team
Ryan Pierre ( 31 ) CC_Porco_Jones
Anthony Fletcher** ( 25 ) RIO_mare
Leroy Ablett** ( 25 ) lasposturas
Ian Hamsten** ( 25 ) lasposturas
Richard Davidson ( 29 ) Luka_Warriors
Tim Malone ( 28 ) Manicomicos_Cycling_Team
Wilt Frances** ( 28 ) Manicomicos_Cycling_Team
Jasper Caan ( 21 ) SaulSalinasTeam

7º  Blair ( teamcaptain ) on 0:00"  :)
12º  Hamsten** ( free role ) on 0:13"
13º  Ablett** ( helper ) on 0:13"

A great race, and excellent results !  8)
Especially s4 was nice to see ; a break away group of just 5 ; the 3 point scoring Australians + 2 foreigners, most likely too fast helpers.

Also Fletcher** was riding in a free role, but his risky s2 was not good, and he dropped as only Aussie out of the s2 peleton of 64.
I had to try, in case the race went different as I expected. ( despite his s2 drop, almost points, also helper Frances** was close ).
More important, all 6 helpers were in the s2 front peleton(64), and in the s3 peleton(41) only the 21yo helper could not follow the high pace.
And as mentioned before ; the s4 break away group was 60% Australian, what caused these excellent results.

Australia scored 340 points in this sprint race ; this is more than the total points of all 6 sprint races of the 5 previous seasons. 8)
Only Great Britain ( 430 points ) did better in this NT race 3. They moved up to the 3º place in the season ranking, now 780 points.
Norway is 2º with 830 points, and Australia is still the leader, now with 950 points.

Great race!! after S4 I was  :o :o we are going to win, we are going to win!! but maybe too many efforts wasted in previous sectors, so others like Bud Power were a bit more fresh hehe, anyway, nice to see that breakdown in sector 4.

Can we start to dream of two WC titles to Australia in two seasons?
And the good news, Workman should be favourite with two weather bonuses, plus most of my 24+yo TTers are at around 99.9 for their TT attribute.

but maybe too many efforts wasted in previous sectors
wasted = used  ;)
Because I don't think it was a waste of EP in previous sections.

Don't forget that the flat sprint GV of Jasper Blair is not great compared to the few top flat sprinters in the game.
For example my ex-sprinter Lebrun had a much better flat sprint GV than Blair, and Lebrun was not ranked very high when he was at his peak.
Blair is the nr 3 in the CFF sprint ranking, but that is misleading because he is ranked as hill-sprinter, and this was a NT flat sprint race.

And indeed, Blair did not finish full power.
His tactics were based on profiting of the storm ( ánd profiting of his helper with double weather bonus ).
Top secret info = ;)
Blair was riding in s1-s2-s3-s4-s5 ( last digit/number of his/these skills ) = stamina - TT - tech. - aggres. - and finished in tw of M.Hunter.

Maybe good to know for your, Franky, because you were a bit surprised that I selected Frances sooner than Malone ;
They were both riding in the exact same helpers tactic.
And although they were in all sections in the same group and even finished in the same time,
there was a big difference in the result ;
Frances finished as 23º due to his double weather icons,
and Malone finished as 56º despite his much better flatsprint GV compared to Frances.

Can we start to dream of two WC titles to Australia in two seasons?
Well, if Australia can become world champion this season, and you do the NT job next season and also achieve a WC title ;
yes, then we can dream of two WC titles to Australia in two seasons. ;)
And the good news, Workman should be favourite with two weather bonuses, plus most of my 24+yo TTers are at around 99.9 for their TT attribute.
Nice !  8)
I like double weather icons in NT races, especially after the sprint race of yesterday. :))
Besides your Kirk Workman, also your Kirk Clinton has a double weather bonus,
because in the NT time trial of next week there are 3 active weather icons ; rain, wind and sun ( 32ºC ).
There is no picture of the sun, because there is just space for 2 weather pictures on CFF pages, but for sure sun counts too.

I know you know this, AA, and you just overlooked the active sun now, but good to mention for managers who do not know this yet :

If 30ºC or more is mentioned, the sun icon is always active, also when there is no space for a sun picture.
If 10ºC or less is mentioned, the cold icon is always active, also when there is no space for a cold picture.

CFF u23 Dream Team =
hills icon
1. James Bush  ( 22, Antequera )
4. Danny Gill  ( 22, Zatarra )
6. Nate Gailes  ( 22, Cabrasverdes )
cobbles icon
1. Mannie Hines  ( 22, PerrosPardos )
2. Neil Spiker  ( 22, ChessPower )
7. Noel Marbley  ( 22, PerrosPardos )
climb icon
5. Walter Muller  ( 22, Orange )

Nothing changed to the Australians who were in the u23 DT at the start of this season ; now all on the exact same positions, that is good. :)
There is just one change ; Noel Marbley is new, and entered the cobble icon ranking, at the moment as 7th. :)

Australia u23 ( 186 cyclists ) :

RACE 3 :  Bellinzona

32ºC

Bellinzona, Switzerland,
In previous season Kirk Workman almost won the 50 km time trial in Salzburg ; unfortunately a 2nd place on 0:00"
Back then he had one active weather icon, and now he has two ! I have high expectations of the max. experienced Workman.
Although you never know, because there are always unexpected, surprising results in a NT time trial.
This time trial is 16 km shorter, but I estimate that this kilometers difference does not matter to Workman.

For sure a 50km TT or a 34km TT makes a difference in who to select, because Australia has many, many excellent TT specialists.
Also experience and weather conditions have impact on the selection procedure, back then it was cold, and now sun, wind and rain.
Hopefully also now such a great amount of points as in the flat time trial of previous season 17 =
+ + + 12º + 14º + 15º = 840 points ! 8)
the other 3 finished 1, 2, and 3 seconds outside the points (21º, 24º, 25º).
With hopefully thé difference that 2º is changed into 1º now. :)

For now 6 are selected, to me easy and obvious choices. It should be 7, but I don't want a too full selection already.
Because who to select for the final 2 places is a difficult puzzle, with many candidates who might be able to score points on a lucky day.
So, the selection is still in progress and the final 3 will be selected later this week.

Australia NT selection :

Kirk Workman** ( 30 ) Aurora_Australis
Bud Mount ( 26 ) ChronoTony
Dean Shields* ( 31 ) Aurora_Australis
Kirk Clinton** ( 25 ) Aurora_Australis
Nobby Licuria ( 25 ) Aurora_Australis
Tod Henderson ( 25 ) Aurora_Australis

I have to admit that I only took a 2-second look regarding Workman as a possible winner, none of the others were thought about.
I also forgot that we didn't top the tables last season.

I notice that Taylor has almost overtaken catapunchimpon's best 20-year-old, which for me is pleasing particularly as Taylor (& Janson - also 5 talent) will have perfect flat training up to 90 with an immediate switch to technique training.

Yes it's true, Oska stated this previously when the question was asked (don't remember whether it was in CFF3 or CFF2).

Also the case in normal CFF races, not just in the NT races.
For example the Amstel Gold Race of this evening = 30ºC
The race picture does not show the sun picture, but for sure the sun icon is active now ; 30ºC and more =
So, always look at the temperature when there are 2 weather pictures shown. The cold icon is active with 10ºC and less.
