Stage 6: Cobblehills FFFFC^^ (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/italia.jpg)
Stage 7: Cobblehills CC^CCC^ (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/italia.jpg)
4 stages in Italy. Cobblehills everywhere. Not only the random stage 6 was a flat-cobblehills, but the stage 7, which usually is flat cobbles, turned out to be Strade Bianche, in which hills are also important. Indeed it's not a good calendar for Australia. Not only the Australian TTers will be probably on their lowest level ever, but there is no flat cobbles, the other terrain in which Australia has great power with Angus Friend and Keith Hunter.
Maybe Levin, Trump and Clickett could still make a good result right now on a TT stage, but I guess that due to their age, they will be worse when the TT race arrives. Fortunately, we have some other young TT talents coming soon. Apart from the 23yo generacion of AA, the 24 yo Bud Mount is the 8th best flat TTer on game right now. I hope that Mount, Clickett, Workman and, maybe, Licuria can score good points on the TT race. We'll see.
The other positive aspect of the calendar is that the 2 last races seem quite suitable for Sam Rooney. I don't think he is good enough to win a race, but maybe he could score some good points and maybe I can consider taking him as leader for the stage 5 too, in order to fight for the individual championship. It depends on how good the young talent Marc Huling becomes, as he is now on the transfermarket waiting for his new team to be training on the final sub24 year. Anyways, maybe I'm too optimistic and he doesn't have any chance against top cobblehillers from Ukraine, Spain, Belgium or Netherlands who will, for sure, be leaders on the 3 races counting with a bunch of top riders as domestiques.
I will try my best to keep the Australian NT level closest to the previous seasons as possible. Any advice or suggestions are more than welcome. Specially if you have experience with tricky tactics for any particular race, just send me a message with your advice. NT races are very often quite unpredictable to me.

Let's hope other teams follow this sign :P
It's clear to me that Shields is the best option for hills races. Coleman, Walkins, Fredickson and Morton can help him enough (although one of them will be probable free role), so I decided to give opportunities to other young talents. Kane Harper, who will make his debut, may also help, but he need to improve his experience a lot.
Gerard Shields, 27, Quickstepbronx 90.10
Vinnie Coleman, 33, galegospolabici 89.18
Zack Walkins, 27, Quickstepbronx 88.61

4º Shields :)
Excellent result ! Also nice previews and lists ! A great debut as Australian NT manager, Ophiuko ! 8)
My 24yo Spanish hills specialist made his NT debut too ; Rubiera did amazing by finishing 5º, as last of the front group.

wow, Huling is a monster in Hills-Cobb! Talent 5, I presume, since Marc Ashley is Talent 5 and does not seem to be closing the gap :)

4th in the hills is a good start to your NT career for Australia.

My first new generation 19yo TT prospect, TT is a little low but that's ok. Still a 2 out of 3 chance of ending up sacked.

Thanks Vos and AA for the good words about the first race. Let's hope I can keep scratching some good points in all races.
For this climbing race, Jason Furey will be the leader. I will be happy if he gets a top10 position, but considering that TeamEuroscalt is managing the Norwegian NT, the race is probably going to be a lottery. 5 other Australian climbers are selected to help Furey. I consider the rest of good climbers were too old to be selected, as the younger ones were better than them. So then, I've selected 2 promising climbers and 1 promosing TTer (nº1 on sub23 DT right now)
Jason Furey, 27, PDM_cycling_team 92.00
Colin Mount, 29, Teka 91.35

8th is a sound result given that Furey can't be one of the best, and still close to the leading teams.

I wouldn't mind the pockets of those who can spend $25mill, $35mill, or more, on a 19-year-old who might end up having zero talent (yes I know there's a cheat you can hack into to effectively calculate the talent - and there's the "reveal your talent card [however that one only works on your own team so isn't applicable], but still), those are deep pockets.

That someone has that kind of $$ to spend on riders amazes me. Makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong and also what it would take to have such a massive bankroll where I wouldn't hesitate to spend $10m+ for a rider. To this point, the most I've doled out on the market for a rider is $3.1m, which is chump change to the current Div 1 top 4 teams (and probably most of the other D1 teams).
Curious, I looked up and came up with an average for the five "most expensive purchases" for each of the D1 top four teams and this is what I found:
- 17.1m (JGMTeam)
- 34.1m (FaltososDeChigre)
- 22.8m (Mlb)
- 42.0m (Rekutxuteam)
What's the average for Lanihuli Cycling? 2.3m.
I suppose that makes me a penny pincher. LOL.
And when I am fortunate enough to land a rider on the market, I'm like the number crunching dude from Moneyball.

A lot of teams have over $50mill in the bank, I know this because I did have $43-45mill or something at the start of the season & I wasn't near the top of the list in Div1.
Anyway, a second 19-year-old TTer has secured at least the next two seasons in the team.

It's rule of the marketprices. You have to adapt to them if you want to get the best riders. You have a great advantage: no competitors/few competitors who also want to buy the same 19yo TTers than you. But in other terrains, when you see all the riders that you want go to other teams for +20M, eventually if you want them you will have to pay that money (if you have it). I'd say even you have lost some great TTer opportunities as David Derby this season (cause he also was good as HV).

Decent result at the previous climbing race. Still adding top10 points, which is good.
For this sprint race in the North of Italy, I'm really doubtful about the tactics. There is level 2 of wind, which makes me think that you can lose the race (and all the points) in just 1 section. I feel it's very easy to select the wrong tactics, and it's hard to find the correct one. I'll have to try and see if we are lucky.

Sprint races are always madness and with a bit of wind ever worst...good luck man! :-\
-
I'd say even you have lost some great TTer opportunities as David Derby this season (cause he also was good as HV).
If I remember correctly, I was actually glad not to get him because it was a better HV prospect than TTer. There was a second one I missed who I think from memory went for thirty something mill.
Of course I've also missed out on at least one flat TTer who's slightly better than the couple of TTers I've got this season, but I'm not taking the time to chase 19-year-old TTers with a different flag icon.
Good fortunes on the sprint race tomorrow Ophiuko, just note my non-Aussie sprinter has a wind weather bonus.

A disaster for the sprint NT race, no luck at all. Seeing that Vos was too conservative last season, I decided to attack. As usual, my attack left behind no one, not even the 21yo, not even on S2 :o. Of course I was expecting to have a reduced front group on S3, so anyone that had decided to attack on S3 or S4 wouldn't be on the front group by then. Well, something else to learn on the NT races: attacks on S1 or S2 are worthless, unless you have a conservative tactic and it's someone else who attacks ;D

Well, I would say that this is not totally true. The only truth is that NT races are always madness and sprint races even worst ;D ;D
-
I know it is not true, every conclusion you make now, the next NT sprint race will be weird in another way and gives a totally different conclusion.
But no worries, Ophiuko, failures in NT sprint races can happen to the best. :)) ;)
Remarkable to see that just 4 sprinters finished on 0:00", most likely this is the first time ever that a little break away group sprinted for victory.
"Info" for next season ; this NT sprint race ( Giro, 119km ) with 2 stripes of wind went like this ; 99 - 77 - 45 ( ??? ) - 23 - 4 ( :o )
My conclusion = all 4 NT sprint races (2x no wind, 1x 3stripes, 1x 2stripes) of seasons 16, 15 and 14, were completely different from each other.
Also I must agree with the conclusion of Franky ; :)
The only truth is that NT races are always madness and sprint races even worst ;D ;D
-
I know it's not true ;D It was an ironic way of saying "attacks are always effective except for mine". It had happened to me before with the Spanish NT on a hills stage. Also attacked with most of the team at 5 (including several free role); no one left behind.
Maybe there is some trick to make your attack effective that I don't know. Maybe only 1 NT cannot make an effective attack and a combined attack of several teams is needed. Or maybe it's just luck, who knows. For sure on regular league of 1st div these tactics would have knocked out most of the peloton.
-
Just a note, I'm ceasing my hunt for 19 year old TTers this season (one currently on the transfer list is being bidded on), and will try again next season.
-
Ophiuko, can you show the U23 lists once again? I'm kind of curious to see my Lucas and Haber on those compared to the other Australian ones?
-
Well, now that I stopped promoting...this are the guys that I'm training right now (hills)

I'm afraid Franky, those two 21-year-olds simply aren't where they should be, and will be even more so at 70% training. If nobody else wants them, they don't have a real future.
-
If Pocock will be perfectly trained from now on, he still has a chance to get the golden icon due to his high aggressiveness.
Of course, also the ( to me unknown ) talent rating is of influence.
My advice = try to sell him once again for 1,-
Keeping him is not an option if you cannot train him good. If he is not sold again, unfortunately he has to go (but not a waste to Australia).
Seaman can get much and much higher secundairy skills than Pocock.
However, his too low aggressiveness kills his potential.
In the end he will have a few GV points less than Pocock, if both were trained perfectly.
My advice = fire Seaman immediately.
Even when he would train perfectly from now on, he is by far not good enough.

I think this flat TT is the most difficult NT selection I've ever made. There are a bunch of Australian TT riders just at the limit of making points on this TT race. I've decided to select 7 riders for making points, and 2 young riders who I don't think they will get points, but they would get very good positions with an improved experience. For the 7 competitors, Mount and Clickett are clear, but I've selected the rest according to my values for the stage counting the experience AND weather bonus. I hope the 7 of them can get points.

Steve Odom, 32, Facha_Bartolo 94.96 // 45º DT
Hey! Steve Odom is 28yo and is mine!! ;D ;D
-
Sorry Franky, I was copy-pasting rows and I forgot to modify Odom's. Changed now.
The NT timetrial went as follows:
5 Bud Mount 24 0: 05" 180 ChronoTony
12 Richard Levin 34 0: 10" 100 Aurora_Australis
15 Kirk Workman 28 0: 11" 70 Aurora_Australis
16 Christian Pinkney 33 0: 11" 60 Aurora_Australis
21 Paul Clickett 33 0: 12" 0 Aurora_Australis
28 Peter Coleman 29 0: 16" 0 HTCHungria
52 Walt Judd 24 0: 25" 0 Frenkie
53 Nobby Licuria 23 0: 25" 0 Aurora_Australis
65 Julian Frances 26 0: 28" 0 Bergtoppers
Only 4 riders made points. Only 1 on top10. Quite sure it must be the worst result ever for Australia on a TT NT race. Clickett, who I considered the 2º best Australian TTer right now, surprisingly disappointed and couldn't make into the top20. Levin, on the contrary, improved my expectations. Good points as expected by Workman and Pinkney, and as I suspected all the rest were close but not good enough to make points. Coleman and Frances were the selected ones. Coleman, even with a weather bonus, made 28º, so probably none of the rest non-selected good TTers could have made into the top20. Frances disappointed a lot, considering how good is he and the weather bonus. Probably experience is his weakness.
After this TT, Australia is 5th with 750 points, 215 points less than the 1st, Netherlands. Now, three cobble-hills races in which our options are reduced to 2 riders, and both of them quite unexperienced: Marc Huling and Sam Rooney. It will be hard to choose the leader, as the next race seems a better suit for Huling but the last 2 are better for Rooney. Considering that John Aakre (NOR) has already 250 points for the individual championship, I think I will split leaders and take the best option for each race.

Well, not too many options for this race. As pure cobble-hiller, Huling is the obvious best leader for the Australian NT team. The level of Australian cobble-hillers is really poor. Only Sam Rooney, Marc Ashley and Stephen Brown can really help, maybe Trautemberg too, so all the rest of the selection will be young talents. Alex Byers was at same level than Stephen Brown, but he is too old and I don't think it's worth to bring him as domestique. Let's hope in the future our level is improved by generations of Agua_Verde and Zatarra.
Australian NT selection:
Marc Huling, 23, Turrones 84.22
Sam Rooney, 26, Lemarche 82.27
Marc Ashley, 23, TeaMetal 81.06 debut
Stephen Brown, 25, La_Vie_Claire 80.94 debut
Liam Trautemberg, 23, TeaMetal 80.53 debut
Bob Janson, 22, Agua_Verde 78.37
Brooklyn Abolins, 22, Agua_Verde 77.80
Oliver Odom, 22, Agua_Verde 76.83
Nobby Licuria, 23, Aurora_Australis

Thanks for the lists. I'm really doubting between training Haber optimally or training Lucas optimally. Lucas is talent 5, Haber is talent 4 but slightly ahead at this point (and lower on the main skills cobble+hill). Training Haber optimally would mean that I would need to train the others for a period on 70% and the other way around.
I have a few days to decide, but at this point I think I will go for Lucas...

Thanks for the lists, great job, Ophiuko ! 8)
And good luck in Zalla !

Stage 6 - Carrara-Montalcino
(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/etapas/montalcino.jpg)(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/solnubes.jpg)
I screwed with the tactics on the first cobbles race :-[. I think I may have exceeded the 12 EP for Huling, otherwise he couldn't have lost so much on the final section. But I'm not sure as I set the tactics on Friday and didn't take a picture of them. Anyway, on S3 he had already lost contact with the front group, and on S4 he was isolated, so if I had put one EP lower on the final section, I don't think he could have made any points.
Now the turn of Rooney comes, I have no idea of his options on these 2 races, but for sure we will try to do the best. The domestiques are not the best, but I tried to choose the best Australia has, according to my own percentages, and of course with a mix of young talents. Let's hope it works.
Australian NT selection:
Sam Rooney, 26, Lemarche 82.50
Kirk Trump, 34, $Tourmalet 79.70
Marc Huling, 23, Turrones 79.50
Markus Moore, 29, Xegalaki_Pro 77.76
Oliver Segond, 30, catapunchimpon 76.32
Herbie Ashley, 24, Flyvende_hjul 75.43 debut
Nate Filsbourne, 23, PucelaBike 75.04 debut
Nick Thompson, 22, TeaMetal 74.13 debut
Oliver Odom, 22, Agua_Verde 70.88

You have one goal, stay ahead of the British. If I remember correctly, the Brits have only beaten us twice (once with me as NT manager, once with Vos), both times winning the NT title.
Btw, good news with my 23-year-old TTers. I don't know their current rank on the TT gold list, however I've been testing them in the gold World Challenges, and they're equal to all of ChronyTony's 24-year-old non-Aussie cyclists that I've seen.

Stage 7 - Siena-Siena (Strade Bianche)
It didn't go well in the previous race either. Team leader Rooney went too slow at section 2 and lost contact with the front group. Hopefully the last race will go better, Rooney has weather bonus.
In other matters, any candidates for next year? My job was only for one transition season with no pressure ;D, next year AA's TTs will be at full force again so I guess there will be options for the championship, depending on the calendar.
Australian NT selection:
Sam Rooney, 26, Lemarche 83.24
Marc Huling, 23, Turrones 82.87
Alex Byers, 33, FREERIDER 80.47
Kirk Trump, 34, $Tourmalet 79.94

5th's a nice result from the final race, we didn't tend to handle the combination of hills with cobbles well in the NTs.
Btw: My entire team will be Aussie TT next season, so I'll have plenty of vacant positions to fill with 19-year-old TTers, and also have plenty of money to get rid of (for anybody not training 19-year-olds of their own next season).
-
A very good 5º place in the final NT race to Siena. Well done, ophiuko. 8)
So, a good finish of this "in-between-season", with even a not suited calendar.
About next season ; so far still 0 candidates.
No problem to me if I will be (automatically) the NT manager of next season.
So, if there are still no candidates on the last day of this season, I will be a candidate and I will try to win the elections. :))
But next season can be a great opportunity, and it is almost 100% sure Australia has a much better prospect than this season.
Of course, also a bit depending on the s17 NT calendar.
So my advice to every Australian manager = think about it / consider to be a candidate.
And for sure including ophiuko, because despite this was (as expected) not a great NT season to Australia,
I'm impressed by the amazing job ophiuko did as Australian NT manager, including lists and previews.
My vote goes to you if you want to do the job again, ophiuko, and next season will be better = more fun. :)
But no pressure at all on anyone ; if you are not in the mood, or you don't have the time, or any other reason why not ; no problem,
also next season Australia will have a good NT manager, just like in all previous NT seasons.
And we even have some very good managers Down Under who never were the NT manager. Season 17 will be perfect for a debut. ;)
-
Come on, I will be in 1st division again next season, I think I can handle both things (and fail in both things ;D ;D ;D )

Thanks Vos. I think it wasn't a good season but not a disastrous season either. I think we had real chances of making good points in stages 3 and 6 and we missed them. The 2 of them were races with a lot of flat and I took risks (one attacking, one saving too much). The rest were just as expected, maybe a bit better than expected in the first 2 stages. If we hadn't failed in stages 3 and 6 then I would call it a good season. And still considering that we had made 200 points in each stages 3 and 6, we would have gained just 1 position on the teams ranking. So definitely it was the perfect season to fail and take risks in some stages ;D. and of course giving experience to young talents, which I think I did as you can see in my selections.
With respect to the NT manager, next season I will be taking care of planification and tactics of a 1st div team, whose manager doesn't have time (with permission of Oska). Adding that to the management of the prediction game, means that I won't have any time to spend for NT team. But I'll consider in future seasons.
Come on, I will be in 1st division again next season, I think I can handle both things (and fail in both things ;D ;D ;D )
Great, I've already voted for you ;)

Very good season 17 schedule, Franky ! :)
Much better compared to previous season ; 2 cobblehills races are replaced by an extra TT + a flat-cobble race, both are much in favor of Australia.
About fucking it up ;), also possible in NT race 6, the semi-hills time trial.
Because I assume you have many choices, so it can be tricky to make a proper selection, especially with a not entirely correct estimated GV.
But no worries ; Down Under we have a lot of TT expertise, so we can have a better estimated GV than the rival countries.
Good luck and have fun, Franky ! 8)
