"Hi dear Aussies :-* , a new season starts, here are the Australian lists."

Tomorrow the season 18 preview + the NT race 1 preview and selection.

I think you missed Ali Steele for climbing flat. Again 2 cobble hills races, as in the season I was the manager. This time there are 5 24-25 yo, who were 22-23 by then that can make good results..

The GV percentages of climbing-flat in these lists are not the GV for a CFF flatclimb icon / a pure flatclimb race FFFFM without downhill.
The climbing-flat in the Australian lists are for mountain races with 3 or 2 flat sections, such as FFFMM, FFMDM, or even MFFMM.
What is a very big difference in estimated GV compared to a FFFFM race without downhill,
for example the climbing-flat GV in this list gets 16% downhill.
And thé reason why the 23yo golden flatclimb specialist Ali Steele is not in the top15 of this climbing-flat list, his downhill skill is low.

These "standard GV percentages" in the lists are just an rough indication, and is from a CFF2 NT evaluator, also used by the Dutch.
These are not my own estimated GV's, and those would be different for every specific NT race anyway.

Also good to know about these lists ;
cobble-hills = a pure cobblehills race without flat sections that ends in a cobblehills section ( see it as an entire red Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch race ).
climbing-hills = a hillsclimb race without flat sections that ends in a climb section ( see it as a MDHHM race, or something like this ).

As mentioned earlier ; a season 18 preview tomorrow. But I can already react on your post :
Again 2 cobble hills races, as in the season I was the manager.
You are wrong.
When you were the NT manager in season 16 ; Australia had the by far worst season schedule ever with even 3 cobblehills races.
See your opening post of season 16 = https://cyclingforfun.org/smf/index.php?topic=729.msg26572#msg26572

My assesment of "by far worst season schedule ever" is of course also based on the quality of the Australian generation of that specific season.
So, including your remark below :
This time there are 5 24-25 yo, who were 22-23 by then that can make good results..
And including the fact that this was the only season when there was a "TT-gap".
Athough Australia scored more points than I expected in the flat time trial of season 16.
But I read that you were dissapointed with those 410 TT points, what indeed is much lower compared to all other seasons.
Even back in season 2 there were 510 points in the flat time trial ( despite this, Australia was world champion in the first NT season :) ).
So you have the "doubtfull honor" to be the Australian NT manager with the lowest amount of points in a NT flat time trial race.

In previous season 17 Australia was very lucky with the season schedule ;
together with season 7 the by far two best season schedules Australia ever had.
This season 18 it seems we are not so lucky with for example 2 cobble hills races, but as you already mentioned,
we have some very young, good cobblehills specialists now, and the teamcaptain should score some points if the tactics go well.
In the golden cobblehills ranking ( I filtered out the flat-cobble specialists ) we have now the numbers :
16 + 33 + 38 + 52 + 62 + 76 + 93 + 106 + 108 + 109* + 138 + 158.

This is much and much better than in all previous NT seasons. 8)
Only the nr 109* is an old ( 28yo ) cobblehills specialist.
For many seasons he was the only Aussie with a golden cobblehills icon, and the seasons before him we had zero golden cobblehills cyclists.

So, it is not such a bad season schedule as it normally would have been with 2 cobblehills races.
And I had once a worst season schedule, also with 2 cobblehills races, but somehow Australia achieved a top result in the final ranking.
It must be, because I was 5 times Australian NT manager before and my worst result is 2nd in the final ranking. :))
Probably the cobblehills races are not bad to Australia anymore.
But unfortunately again a flat sprint race. I would like a sprint race with 1 hills section or little hills in the flat sections much more,
because then the Australian Bullet can show how good he is.
If it is not again a tactical failure in a NT sprint race, what seems to happen a lot to every Australian NT manager, including me.
Anyway, more about the season 18 schedule tomorrow.

NT season 18 calendar =

1. (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/belgica.jpg)  FHHHH - 202km ( La Fleche Wallone )

2. (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/suiza.jpg)  MDMDM - 125km ( Grimselpass )

3. (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/holanda.jpg)  FFFFF - 204km ( Venray )

4. (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/suiza.jpg)  TT=FFFFF - 34km ( Bellinzona )

5. (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/francia.jpg)  FFFHC^ - 134km ( Meudon )

6. (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/francia.jpg)  HHFC^C - 153km ( Le Puy-en-Velay )

7. (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/usa.jpg)  CCCCC - 259km ( Richmond )

It is difficult to estimate what is possible for Australia this season, it will depend on many still unknown factors.
With this race calendar I expect that some nations are better, and that competing for the world championship is not possible.
Hopefully Australia can battle for a podiumplace, that will be my goal, but I have no idea if this is a realistic goal.

What is not difficult to guess ; the individual world champion will be a cobblehills specialist.
Unfortunately Australia has no top contender to achieve this, because the best Australian is the nr 16 in the cobblehills ranking.
Besides this not top ranking, he seems to me not versatile enough to be excellent in both very different cobblehills races.
Maybe this gives me the opportunity to ride with 2 different teamcaptains in races 5 and 6. But I did not look into this situation yet.

Looking at this race calendar ; it seems to me that NT race 1 is already crucial, because it should be the 2nd best race of Australia.
The by far best race is of course the time trial.
In previous season 17 Australia scored 840 points in NT race 4, the flat time trial. Hopefully this season again so many points.
For race 7 we have a top contender ( nr 7 ), although a few rival countries have better ánd more scoring cyclists in flatcobble races.
The sprint race ? Well, no predictions about that, just the remark that I hope the tactics will go well. Then Australia should score a few points.
Also in the climb race a few points are possible, and probably in both cobblehills races too.

I will post the NT race 1 preview tomorrow, including the NT selection.
Already I looked at that race and 4 hills specialists are selected. The other 5 will be selected tomorrow.

RACE 1 :  Mur de Huy
(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/etapas/valona.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/bW2A3vY.jpeg)
14ºC (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/viento1.jpg)

Charleroi, Belgium,
The one stripe of wind can make this hills race very tricky, with a real chance of a tactical failure.
Hopefully my tactical gamble ( every tactical choice is a gamble in this NT race ) will go very well, and if so, then I expect a top result.

For the last places many Australian hills specialists were good enough to be selected, but I can select just 9 and had to make difficult choices.

Australia NT selection :

Gerard Shields ( 29 ) Quickstepbronx
Fergus Emerton ( 25 ) Artxube
Herbie Fredickson ( 28 ) Spitz
Tim Morton ( 30 ) 0X
Christian Segond ( 25 ) Matterhorn
Martin Hunter ( 30 ) Manicomicos_Cycling_Team
Natham Davidson ( 25 ) Artxube
Zack Walkins ( 29 ) LaGuardia
Michael Odom ( 24 ) Manicomicos_Cycling_Team ( debut )

Title: Re: Australia s18
Post by: Vos on July 04, 2021, 10:05:52 PM
1º  Shields  =  victory !
11º  Emerton ("helper")

In s3 it still looked good in the front peleton of 31 ; Shields had help of Segond, Morton and Emerton.

In s4 it seemed to look less good at first, but ....... ;
a break away group of 3, then a chasing group of 3 on 0:06", and then a 2nd chasing group of 9 on 0:12", including teamcaptain Shields.
And best helper Emerton was going too fast, he was one group ahead.
If Emerton used one EP less in s4, no doubt he would be behind Shields, and a half EP does not excist, only with ½ EP he could help in s4.
But I had many back-up-helpers-tactics in this race, including the tactic of 2nd best helper Fredickson,
who dropped on purpose in s3, to save energy for a big jump in s4 in order to try to join his teamcaptain. To my surprise this worked !  :)
So, despite the too fast helper Emerton, teamcaptain Shields had the extreme important help in s4 of Fredickson.
And also important ; the 6 cyclists in the front were all isolated ( well, better said 5 cyclists, one of them was an Aussie ).
Only Denmark could have had also a helper in the s4 second chasing group,
but maybe it was a free role or maybe not many EP left or maybe a lack of xp of their 25yo Danish teamcaptain,
because he finished as 6º on 0:09" and was not competing for victory.

In s5 Pinin ( RUS ) had an attack out of the front group and he was solo in the front for a while. He was almost already cheering, but then he was very surprised that Shields suddenly appeared after his fierce attack out of the 2nd chasing group.
So it turned out to be a sprint-deux on the Mur de Huy, and Shields won !  8)

The first NT race victory of Gerard Shields ( Quickstepbronx ), in his team and in this FW, used as helper to Valter.

A great Australian start of NT season 18 ! :)
And thanks to the extra 110 points of Emerton, Australia is now 1st in the ranking with already 410 points.

g0 g0 g0 VOS!!! Nice to see Michael Odom in the list  :D
Thanks  :)
Michael Odom was lucky to be selected, because he had many (sometimes better) rivals who were also good enough to get a selection.
The decisive factor was that I saw that he never rode for Australia yet, and such a cyclist for sure deserves a debut.
There were even more simular cyclists that are not Australian international yet, but they had an extreme low xp.
So, I prefered to select Odom, also because he is high ranked as pure hills specialist in the CFF golden hills ranking.
For this FW he was less suited, but he did a very good helpers job as young 24yo, by being in the s2 front group of just 49.
Hopefully for Odom there is a pure hills race next season, and if not, at least he is an Australian international now.  8)

Well done Vos! I still try to understand how you do it, but ... you do it! :D

How come Bud Mount has over 100 in TT value...?  :o
And would it be too much to ask what rating and rank my rider Marcus Rodriguez has...? He was (is) an experiment I conducted while I was growing a TT-oriented team.

Thanks  :)

About the 100+ on TT, that happened before with some TT-specialists of Aurora Australis.
And your question came up back then too. I cannot remember if there was a good answer.
I just checked the Australian NT evaluator, and the TT-GV is a normal total of 100%.
The best answer I have now = 100+ means supergood !

(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/inglaterra.jpg) Marcus Rodriguez ( 31, TeaMetal ) --> if he emigrates to Australia, then I can answer your question. ;)
Another option ; you can send his stats to me, and then I can compere him with the Australian TT specialists.
He must be good enough to make it into the Australian TT list, if he was Australian.
CFF has a different flat TT GV as the Australian NT evaluator, but the golden TT ranking is of course also a good indication.
You can see the CFF golden ranking too, and Rodriguez is the nr 21 flat TT specialist of the game.
Under and above him are the 15 Australians of the list ( in my first post of this topic ).

Vos uses an 103 calculation, with prime skills to 100, and experience a bonus 3.  It was the standard formula from back in CFF2.

23ºC (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/viento1.jpg)(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/lluvia.jpg)

Ulrichen, Switzerland,
Maybe I was too positive in my season preview that a few points should be possible in this mountain race,
because Furey ( nr 122 ) is much lower ranked then a few seasons ago when I was also the NT manager.
However, with the teamcaptain bonus and the ( hopefully ) extra helpers bonusses, it still might or should be possible.
The reason of the lower ranking is logical ; now there are many younger, better climbers. Unfortunately not an Australian among them.

Not selected are nr 3 Mount and nr 5 Owen, because both are of in-active teams and I rather select Australians of active teams.
So, I gamble that nr 2 Henderson and nr 4 Iverson are good enough, and that at least one of them does an excellent helpers job.
With just 2 good helpers, also Bush (*weather icon) and debutant Gilliam are selected as extra (semi-)helpers.

4 young talents  ( 2 climbers and 2 time trial specialists ) make their debut too.

Australia NT selection :

Jason Furey ( 29 ) PDM_cycling_team
Ryan Henderson ( 31 ) TeamMajer
Dudley Iverson ( 27 ) Manicomicos_Cycling_Team
- - - - - - - - - -
Norm Bush* ( 26 ) HTCHungria
Devin Gilliam ( 24 ) Naram    ( debut )

Barret Ryan ( 21 ) RajenKujen    ( debut )

Jonny Alfier ( 21 ) Aurora_Australis    ( debut )

Appropriate picture, Franky  ;D

Although, there might be a little chance that Australia can surprise in these extreme weather conditions :

Already 7 sprinters are selected because they are easy and obvious choices ;
the best 2 sprinters + a 21yo sprint-supertoptalent + 4 high ranked sprinters with active double weather icons.
Also the 2 remaining places seem to me easy picks, but I have to look into this race more properly before the final 2 are selected.

In my experience ; an active weather icon makes a big difference in a NT race.
Probably even with just 1 active weather icon I would select Wilt before Tim, so with 2 weather icons it is to me an easy and obvious choice.

Ok, very good to read that you train James Bush very well.  8)
I already spotted him in my previous season as Australian NT manager,
that was in season 15 when James Bush entered the game as 19yo.
And immidiately I gave him an xp place to make his debut for Australia in NT race 2 :

https://cyclingforfun.org/smf/index.php?topic=710.msg25786#msg25786

As you can read ; the other 2 xp places in this mountain race were for Nobby Licuria and Jasper Blair ;
what gives a good indication how very impressed I was by the 19yo James Bush.
Nice to see that he turned out to be the nr1 u23 DT ánd even more important ; that he has an excellent manager who trains him very well. :)

- - - - - - - - - -

No doubt you know this, but I mention it anyway because it can be interesting to other, less experienced managers with Australian talents ;
keep in mind the 0,02 automatically u24 bonus per update.
What is  91 x 0,02 =  + 1,82 point automatically per season on every skill.
A now 22yo will gain 1,82 (next season) + 1,34 (the remain of this season) = + 3,16 point automatically before his 24th birthday.

So, the current hill skill of James Bush is excellent already and he does not need to train that anymore due to the u24 bonus.
Only at the end of next season he needs maybe zero, or most likely just a few hills trainings to get to the important 100  hill skill.
Good luck with the downhill and technique trainings !
And very nice that James Bush has good flat as extra, what makes him suited for all different future NT hills races.
Of course, this good flat skill is in your team also an essential extra, to ride the classic hills races AGR, FW and LBL.

RACE 3 :  into the flood disaster

(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/etapas/venray.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/A4JP31W.jpeg)
0ºC (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/viento3.jpg)(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/nieve.jpg)

Breda, the Netherlands,
Today we cycle into the flood disaster, because finish place Venray is in the north of Limburg, not far from the Maas river.
There it is not so extreme bad as in the south of Limburg + big parts of Belgium and Germany.
For now ; the current situation is that the dikes will hold near Venray, and just the outer areas are evacuated.
I wish all the best to all people who are affected by this extreme flood disaster.

About the race ; well, as everyone knows it will be a lottery, and the storm makes it even more unpredictable.
Despite this, the mission will be to try to get the very first NT race top 10 result of Jasper Blair.

So far the "NT palmares" of the Australian Bullet are bad, and he was the teamcaptain everytime ;
season 17 = zero points ( 18º Pierre and 20º Hamsten ; they saved the Australian honor by scoring 40 points )
season 16 = zero points
season 15 sprint race 3 = 15º ( 70 points )
season 15 sprint race 6 = 17º ( 40 points )
season 14 = 11º ( with mechanical breakdown in the crucial s5 ; and 19º Pierre ; what makes a total of 130 points )
So, this bad luck race is even his best NT result, when Jasper Blair was just 24yo.

We have to go back to season 12 to see the last Australian top 10 result in a NT sprint race ;
season 13 = 18º Nelson ( 30 points )
season 12 = Nelson ( 140 points )

Hopefully this season a top 10 result of Jasper Blair. I guess he needs a lot of luck to achieve that.
And maybe it is possible to score a few extra points due to the active double weather icons** of 4 Australians.
The 8 best sprinters are selected, added with 21yo sprint-toptalent Jasper Caan.

Australia NT selection :

Jasper Blair ( 28 ) Manicomicos_Cycling_Team
Ryan Pierre ( 31 ) CC_Porco_Jones
Anthony Fletcher** ( 25 ) RIO_mare
Leroy Ablett** ( 25 ) lasposturas
Ian Hamsten** ( 25 ) lasposturas
Richard Davidson ( 29 ) Luka_Warriors
Tim Malone ( 28 ) Manicomicos_Cycling_Team
Wilt Frances** ( 28 ) Manicomicos_Cycling_Team
Jasper Caan ( 21 ) SaulSalinasTeam

7º  Blair ( teamcaptain ) on 0:00"  :)
12º  Hamsten** ( free role ) on 0:13"
13º  Ablett** ( helper ) on 0:13"

A great race, and excellent results !  8)
Especially s4 was nice to see ; a break away group of just 5 ; the 3 point scoring Australians + 2 foreigners, most likely too fast helpers.

Also Fletcher** was riding in a free role, but his risky s2 was not good, and he dropped as only Aussie out of the s2 peleton of 64.
I had to try, in case the race went different as I expected. ( despite his s2 drop, almost points, also helper Frances** was close ).
More important, all 6 helpers were in the s2 front peleton(64), and in the s3 peleton(41) only the 21yo helper could not follow the high pace.
And as mentioned before ; the s4 break away group was 60% Australian, what caused these excellent results.

Australia scored 340 points in this sprint race ; this is more than the total points of all 6 sprint races of the 5 previous seasons. 8)
Only Great Britain ( 430 points ) did better in this NT race 3. They moved up to the 3º place in the season ranking, now 780 points.
Norway is 2º with 830 points, and Australia is still the leader, now with 950 points.

Great race!! after S4 I was  :o :o we are going to win, we are going to win!! but maybe too many efforts wasted in previous sectors, so others like Bud Power were a bit more fresh hehe, anyway, nice to see that breakdown in sector 4.

Can we start to dream of two WC titles to Australia in two seasons?
And the good news, Workman should be favourite with two weather bonuses, plus most of my 24+yo TTers are at around 99.9 for their TT attribute.

but maybe too many efforts wasted in previous sectors
wasted = used  ;)
Because I don't think it was a waste of EP in previous sections.

Don't forget that the flat sprint GV of Jasper Blair is not great compared to the few top flat sprinters in the game.
For example my ex-sprinter Lebrun had a much better flat sprint GV than Blair, and Lebrun was not ranked very high when he was at his peak.
Blair is the nr 3 in the CFF sprint ranking, but that is misleading because he is ranked as hill-sprinter, and this was a NT flat sprint race.

And indeed, Blair did not finish full power.
His tactics were based on profiting of the storm ( ánd profiting of his helper with double weather bonus ).
Top secret info = ;)
Blair was riding in s1-s2-s3-s4-s5 ( last digit/number of his/these skills ) = stamina - TT - tech. - aggres. - and finished in tw of M.Hunter.

Maybe good to know for your, Franky, because you were a bit surprised that I selected Frances sooner than Malone ;
They were both riding in the exact same helpers tactic.
And although they were in all sections in the same group and even finished in the same time,
there was a big difference in the result ;
Frances finished as 23º due to his double weather icons,
and Malone finished as 56º despite his much better flatsprint GV compared to Frances.

Can we start to dream of two WC titles to Australia in two seasons?
Well, if Australia can become world champion this season, and you do the NT job next season and also achieve a WC title ;
yes, then we can dream of two WC titles to Australia in two seasons. ;)
And the good news, Workman should be favourite with two weather bonuses, plus most of my 24+yo TTers are at around 99.9 for their TT attribute.
Nice !  8)
I like double weather icons in NT races, especially after the sprint race of yesterday. :))
Besides your Kirk Workman, also your Kirk Clinton has a double weather bonus,
because in the NT time trial of next week there are 3 active weather icons ; rain, wind and sun ( 32ºC ).
There is no picture of the sun, because there is just space for 2 weather pictures on CFF pages, but for sure sun counts too.

I know you know this, AA, and you just overlooked the active sun now, but good to mention for managers who do not know this yet :

If 30ºC or more is mentioned, the sun icon is always active, also when there is no space for a sun picture.
If 10ºC or less is mentioned, the cold icon is always active, also when there is no space for a cold picture.

RACE 3 :  Bellinzona

32ºC (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/sol.jpg)(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/viento1.jpg)(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/lluvia.jpg)

Bellinzona, Switzerland,
In previous season Kirk Workman almost won the 50 km time trial in Salzburg ; unfortunately a 2nd place on 0:00"
Back then he had one active weather icon, and now he has two ! I have high expectations of the max. experienced Workman.
Although you never know, because there are always unexpected, surprising results in a NT time trial.
This time trial is 16 km shorter, but I estimate that this kilometers difference does not matter to Workman.

For sure a 50km TT or a 34km TT makes a difference in who to select, because Australia has many, many excellent TT specialists.
Also experience and weather conditions have impact on the selection procedure, back then it was cold, and now sun, wind and rain.
Hopefully also now such a great amount of points as in the flat time trial of previous season 17 =
+ + + 12º + 14º + 15º = 840 points ! 8)
the other 3 finished 1, 2, and 3 seconds outside the points (21º, 24º, 25º).
With hopefully thé difference that 2º is changed into 1º now. :)

For now 6 are selected, to me easy and obvious choices. It should be 7, but I don't want a too full selection already.
Because who to select for the final 2 places is a difficult puzzle, with many candidates who might be able to score points on a lucky day.
So, the selection is still in progress and the final 3 will be selected later this week.

Australia NT selection :

Kirk Workman** ( 30 ) Aurora_Australis
Bud Mount ( 26 ) ChronoTony
Dean Shields* ( 31 ) Aurora_Australis
Kirk Clinton** ( 25 ) Aurora_Australis

I have to admit that I only took a 2-second look regarding Workman as a possible winner, none of the others were thought about.
I also forgot that we didn't top the tables last season.

I notice that Taylor has almost overtaken catapunchimpon's best 20-year-old, which for me is pleasing particularly as Taylor (& Janson - also 5 talent) will have perfect flat training up to 90 with an immediate switch to technique training.

Yes it's true, Oska stated this previously when the question was asked (don't remember whether it was in CFF3 or CFF2).

Also the case in normal CFF races, not just in the NT races.
For example the Amstel Gold Race of this evening = 30ºC (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/viento1.jpg) (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/lluvia.jpg)
The race picture does not show the sun picture, but for sure the sun icon is active now ; 30ºC and more = (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/sol.jpg)
So, always look at the temperature when there are 2 weather pictures shown. The cold icon is active with 10ºC and less.

Difficult last 3 decisions, because ( in this order ) Julian Frances*, Steve Odom and Christian Pocock were extreme close to be selected.
Besides these 3 not selected, excellent TT specialists ; even 6 other Australians were very close too.
Extra info ; at the moment Australia has 30 golden flat TT specialists. 8)

Have you let the other NT managers know that they'll have to fight amongst themselves for the remaining 11 or 12 top twenty placings because Australia is taking 8 or 9 of them.  We need to do what they do in cricket, and have a second IX squad.
Title: Re: Australia s18
Post by: Vos on July 25, 2021, 03:23:27 PM
I estimate in this specific NT time trial ;
On a very lucky day, Australia can even have 12x points scoring cyclists, and on an extreme lucky day even 18x points scoring cyclists.
Of course, most likely a way too positive scenario ( but maybe possible ), the reality will be different.
But also the reality might be very positive, as you can see at the 7x bold made cyclists in the NT selection. I expect they will score points.
Although expectations hardly come true in a NT time trial ; luck can play a big role.

As current leader of the season ranking it might be even possible that we can afford to have a bad luck time trial.
So, if we have just a few points scoring cyclists, much less as expected, but Workman wins this NT race, then I will be happy already. :)
Title: Re: Australia s18
Post by: Vos on July 25, 2021, 03:28:22 PM
About the other, foreign NT managers ; all they do is asking if they can hire an Australian TT specialist for this evening.
I guess the not selected Australians are very wanted in the NT time trial selections of all other nations. :))
Title: Re: Australia s18
Post by: Vos on July 25, 2021, 03:41:06 PM
That 7x bold is on the save side of what I expect. I agree with you that if all goes "normal", it should be at least 8x or even all 9x.
But it is also "normal" that 1 or 2 out of the 9, will have a bad luck race.
Therefore I expect 7x, what is 1x more as the flat time trial of previous season.
Title: Re: Australia s18

We will see what happens this evening.
In CFF3 as Australian NT manager ; I had once a bad luck time trial with mechanical breakdowns and flat tires.
This is also a possibillity.

Very small differences in this time trial, and unfortunately no victory of Workman.
Almost 9 Australians in the points ; Judd was very close, and Iverson had bad luck what most likely caused finishing outside the top 20.
Workman, Shields and Clinton dissapointed a bit, my expectations of them were higher.

Next week a flat-cobblehills race in France. It will be extreme hot with 39ºC, so I need to select enough water carriers.
The highest ranked GB cobblehills specialist has an active sun icon, ánd he is better ranked than the best Australian.
Maybe bad news. Although I cannot estimate if this is really bad, due to the different GV of this specific NT race 5, where flat counts a lot.

For now it seems it will be a battle for the worldchampionship between Australia and Great Britain.
But Norway and Spain have amazing cobblehills specialists, and with 2 cobblehills races to go, they might join the battle too.
Not what I expect, because both nations are far behind already, but it is possible.
What is the most worrying ( according to me ) ;
Great Britain will be amazing in flat-cobble race 7, and might gain up a bit in the next 2 cobblehills races.

Yes, I had this impression also, looking at all 9 selected Australians.
Although I'm not sure about the experience, it just seems like it to me.
Much more obvious to me ; the active weather icons were of less influence as normally.
What sucks, Australia could have really profited of the weather in this NT race. Probably we missed out many points.
Not good, because Great Britain is a very fierce rival in the worldchampionship battle.
The less weather influence in this time trial might have a big consequence in the end.

To unexperienced managers ;
The season is halfway, and almost everyone stopped with recruiting and scouting by now.
Because 19yo's who enter the game so late in the season, have a very big training delay compared to other 19yo's.
It is still possible to recruit/scout a good 19yo the next few days, but this is exceptional and rare.
In my opinion ; after the Giro d'Italia it is a waste of money to continue with scouting/recruiting.

39ºC (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/sol.jpg)

Chatou, 18km west of Paris-centre, France,
In all my previous CFF3 seasons as NT manager we had 1 or 0 golden cobblehills specialists ; but not this season !
This young cobblehills generation looks good, and Australia has 16 golden cobblehills specialists at the moment. 8)

This is not all, because we have some upcoming toptalents as well. For example the current numbers 1, 2 and 5 in the u23 Dream Team.
But no space for young talents in this selection ; Australia goes full power in the battle with Great Britain for the world championship.
Hopefully GB does not score many more points in this NT race 5, if so, probably it will be a silver 2nd place to Australia this season.

These 9 are selected. Some others were close to be selected too. Maybe they get their debut in the next race or in next season.
For sure they are good enough to be selected, but unfortunately I cannot select more than 9.
Nice to mention ; Dylan Lucas ( 23 ) makes his debut, he is already the 2nd best Australian cobblehills specialist in the golden CFF ranking.

In this specific NT race Dylan Lucas is the nr 7 according to my estimated GV.
The teamcaptain role is not certain yet, so, the strategy + tactics can be changed.

Brooklyn Abolins ( 24 ) OphiukoCT
Marc Huling ( 25 ) Turrones
Nick Thompson ( 24 ) TeaMetal

40ºC (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/sol.jpg)(https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/viento2.jpg)

Issoire, central France,
Again a cobblehills race in France, and again it is extreme hot.
Although this is a very different kind of cobblehills race, ánd now there is a hard wind what makes this race much more difficult.
I do not expect amazing results like in flat-cobblehills race 5.
But Australia has a good lead in the season ranking, so, every scored point in this race 6 brings us closer to the possible world championship title.

Australia NT selection :

Marc Huling ( 25 ) Turrones
Brooklyn Abolins ( 24 ) OphiukoCT
Nick Thompson ( 24 ) TeaMetal
Dylan Lucas ( 23 ) Zatarra
Bob Janson ( 24 ) Agua_Verde
Sam Rooney* ( 28 ) Agua_Verde
Marc Ashley ( 25 ) TeaMetal
Oliver Odom ( 24 ) Frier_Accounting
Ali Haber* ( 23 ) Zatarra    ( debut )

7º  Sam Rooney ( free role )
11º  Marc Huling ( teamcaptain )
= 260 points  :)
A to me very surprising free role result of Rooney. Apparently he likes to ride in 40ºC.
And a decent good result of Huling, although I expect of him to finish top 10 the next time.

Australia was split 3rd in the ranking of most points in this race, together with Spain.
Great Britain scored 40 more points due to the race victory of Luke Rose ( who finished as 134º last week ).
Norway scored 10 more points, mainly due to John Aakre ; 2nd now, 1st last week, and the undisputed leader of the individual ranking.
This daily race top 4 was also the top 4 in the season ranking before race 6, so, of course they are also the top 4 after this race 6.

Next week a long-distance cobble race in Richmond, Virginia ( USA ).

RACE 7 :  Richmond

29ºC (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/solnubes.jpg)

Richmond, Virginia, USA,
Australia is going full power to defend the enormous gap of 635 points towards Great Britain.
Therefore all 6 golden flatcobble specialists are selected, added with 2 silver cyclists ; a 24yo debutant, ánd good old Angus Friend.
The selection of this former individual world champion and 5x NT race winner, causes that the other Aussies are extra motivated.

Rival Great Britain should do very good and I expect that they will get the 2nd most points in this race, behind the Netherlands.
There are some other countries, for example Italy and Denmark, that probably score enough points too.
What is good, because we do not want a Great Britain that dominates this race with many cyclists in the points ( they did in the past ).
But I expect that Keith Hunter should do well and scores more than enough points to secure the world championship,
even if Great Britain achieves a surprising, insane big amount of points.

Australia NT selection :

Keith Hunter ( 28 ) Agua_Verde
Peter Boit ( 28 ) Combuijs
Vince Whisman ( 27 ) Luka_Warriors
Dave Taylor ( 24 ) Bikeos
Donald Odom ( 24 ) CajaRuralZamora
Sean Jameson ( 28 ) Ciclastur
Clyde Mayne ( 24 ) Galletto    ( debut )
Angus Friend ( 35 ) Mlb
Walter Muller ( 22 ) Villavante    ( debut )

The final cyclist is selected, and as announced, he is an experience cyclist.
Many amazing and/or promising Australians to chose from for this last place, where my condition was to give someone his debut.

I decided to select the nr 4 of the u23 DT ( and nr 1 as hillsclimber, because nrs 1 + 2 are flatclimbers and nr 3 is a pure climber ).
Of course, a hillsclimber is not very usefull to the NT of Australia, because there was just one hillsclimb NT race in all 17 NT seasons.
But I looked at all Australians who deserves a debut i.m.o., even including tour cyclists.
And for example the 23yo flatclimber Ali Steele was very close to be selected, despite there was never a NT flatclimb race in the past.
Decisive for me to select the 22yo Walter Muller instead of many others = a reward that Muller is picked as free cyclist. 8)

Something else ;
There are still no candidates for next NT season.
Perhaps good to point out that also next season Australia will be amazing in almost every season calendar.
It's fun to ride with the best Australians ánd to compete in the top of the NT season ranking. :)
It seems to me next season is a great opportunity to be the Australian NT manager, including for someone who never did this fun job.
And keep in mind ; I can assist with feedback, if that is wanted, to make the job more easy than it already is.

AUSTRALIA  =  WORLD CHAMPION  ! ! !

Richmond flatcobble race =
A direct confrontation with rival GB :
Hunter ( AUS ) won the sprint a deux for the 2nd place of Brady ( GB ). Hummelsby ( DEN ) won solo.
An excellent race result of Hunter, with big thanks to helper Boit who launched him into s5.
We did not even need these 250 points of the final NT race, because Australia is world champion with a gigantic gap :

Final NT ranking top 5, season 18 =

2 (https://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/imagenes/inglaterra.jpg)    1.975

Also successful this season ;  8)
Excellent recruiting / scouting in a few specialties of 19yo's.  Thanks to those managers too, and good luck with training the young Aussies.

Hopefully also in season 19 there will be a new wave of promising 19yo's Australians. And I know someone who is not expecting that : :))

Great season Vos! Difficult to beat.

For all the aussie managers, I'll be buying cobblers this season. Potentially to train cobble-hillers with sprint, so it would be nice if they have a bit of everything.

Good to hear! Just like my 23-yo Armstrong, but he is lacking a bit of explo...

Anyway, I'll be training 19yo climbers next season. Hope to make a few good tour riders or pure climbers if my selection shows that's the better option.

Thanks ophiuko.  :)
My 2 climb training projects need 1 more season of training, so most likely I'm not setting up a mini-youth team aside.
Unless I recruit/scout a potential top tour talent, that would be a game changer to me.
But I tried that the past 18 seasons without success, so my expectations are extreme low that this will happen next season.
Anyway, my recruiting/scouting will be mainly on climbing, with the purpose to sell if he is good enough and not a top tour talent.

I wish good luck and much fun to my successor Aurora Australis, who will be the NT manager of season 19. 8)
Don't forget to vote everyone ; it might be a brutal, harsh, fierce election battle.  :))

Of course, this season 18 world championship is for the most part thanks to the CFF managers with Australian top cyclists.
