Same here, and I have never seen so many mutations before a race or a tour.
Also it seems like an ongoing process of mutations, that is new to me too, so far it changes every single day.

Maybe this fact is of influence ; the Olympic roadrace starts just 6 days after the TdF finishes.
For me, this is something to consider in the final choices of the 15 picks.

I don't know why any of them would think they can do both, or at least both well, and particularly given that some did the Giro too.  And for those wanting "race legs," surely a shorter race would do fine.

If I was a team manager, I'd be saying no to having those seeing Olympic glory in the TdF, of course money comes into it (TdF paying teams based on who starts the race).

Indeed, money plays for a sure a role in the selection decisions.
In a situation where the cyclists have a contract with their team ( TdF ) but are riding for their nation in the olympic race with a different staff.
But some mutations have each a different story, although i.m.o. the real reason does not have to be the reason they released in the press.

For example topsprinter Sam Bennett is deselected with as official reason a knee injury.
But his team manager reacted like this ;
“I cannot prove that he does not have knee pain, but I am starting to think more and more that it is more fear of failure than just pain.”
So this is a big part of his reason why Bennett is deselected.
And in my opinion this might have something to do with it also ;
the fact that Bennett leaves his team at the end of 2021, and signed a contract with rival team Bora-Hansgrohe.

A solo victory of Alaphilippe in stage 1.

Two gigantic crashes had a big impact on this stage ; some had injuries and big time loss, or even worse ;
Sütterlin, Konovalovas and Lemoine are already abandon.
And the latest news is that Soler does not start tomorrow, also due to the crashes. Perhaps tomorrow one or a few more do not start too.

Magnificient solo victory of van der Poel, ánd an incredible achievement that he is the new GC leader now.
Because in order to get the yellow jersey, he also had to win the first passage of the Mûr-de-Bretagne to score extra boni-seconds.
In the picture ; when van der Poel crossed the finishline, his thoughts were with his grandfather Poulidor, who passed away 19 months ago.

A stage with many crashes and many victims. Among them Thomas, and in a later crash Roglič who felt hard and lost time.
Geesink, Haig ( 11x picked ) and Ewan ( 21x picked ) are abondan ; maybe more before stage 4 starts today.

When I heard the description of the last few kms, I was wondering whether this type of thing would occur.  I don't get their idea, if they want sprint stages to be more exciting, then they should make the entire stage more strenuous to make them work, not have 200km of boredom & the last couple of kms a narrow numerous corner traffic jam accident waiting to happen.

Yes, I know it's fun to watch, but so is a smash-up derby.  You don't want that for F1 though, and they shouldn't seek it here.  They need to ask whether they're a professional sport and start thinking like one.

To me this is not fun to watch at all ; only a few weird thrill-seekers like to see such a stage.

It seems to me the same old story caused by A.S.O. ; commercial interest was chosen above sportive interest.
In this case a famous local castle had to be near the finishline ; nice heli-pictures are more important than the safety of cyclists.

Hopefully they will finally realise that such a stage with many crashes is bad publicity for the cycling sport and the Tour de France.

And on top of this, also a very dumb mistake with 2 curves right before the finishline.
As you can see in the picture that I have posted, they cannot sprint in a straight line and have to switch from left to right.

What if a miracle happened, and there were no crashes in the narrow streets of the last 10km ;
then many, many, many would be involved in the crash of Ewan and Sagan, right before the finishline.
It would have been a gigantic crash on a very high speed, due to the descending road before the final 2 curves.

well this tour is going much better compared to the giro, just sad about ewan. But first in the cff group and 42th in the general GC.

Van der Poel ( 5º on 0:31" ) did great too by unexpectedly holding on to the yellow jersey. Pogačar is now 2nd GC on just 8 seconds.
