An epic solo victory of Mohoric in a very exciting long distance stage that looked a bit like a classic race.
Many things happened ;
for example van Aert tried to attack the yellow jersey of van der Poel, who both were in the impressive break away group.
Roglic had a very bad day, he could not follow the peleton of GC contenders and he lost many minutes. His GC is over now.

If it's because of the accidents, Roglic should retire before this stage & go for Volta.  I have to wonder though, because almost all of Jumbo was dead in the water, and so many in the same team, were there severe injuries in all of them?

A great solo victory of Teuns ( see picture ).
Pogacar showed his supremacy in this first mountain stage ; he takes the GC lead and already it is almost certain that he will win the TdF.
Roglic and Thomas finished many minutes behind the GC contenders group ( who can only battle for a podiumplace in this Tour ),
So, also Thomas his GC ambition ends now. And this morning Roglic decided to abandon.

( the not injured ) van der Poel made the smart decision to abandon before stage 9, due to his olympic mountainbike ambition.

A superb victory of O'Conner in a rainy and cold mountain stage 9,
more than 5 minutes ahead of nr2  Cattaneao and the surprising nr 3 Colbrelli.
Pogacar took it easy, attacked late, finished as 6th, and won a half minute to the GC riders who only can battle for the GC podium.

Everyone suffered due to the brutal weather conditions, what created a long list of abandon cyclists in just this stage 9 :
