Thanks for accepting this interview, I am so glad to be talking with you. Great beginning of the season for Verbeek in Down Under and later in San Remo, and after that…. He is been hiding from the rest of the peloton. Have you follow a different path this season to get to the Ardennes? No problem! It is nice to be recognized for the great results in the past and to be asked for interviews such as these, plus the sponsor likes the publicity.
Verbeek has started really well, but he almost always does. Its hard to forget how unique he is when you ride with him year after year. I have thought about changing things up but as soon as I saw the less favourite weather in MSR and the good weather predictions in the Ardennes I knew I had to focus on the hill classics as always.
What results would be good enough for you? Do You think you can achieve a double Victory (Amstel and Liege) - this interview is going to be posted after Amstel, but i reckon it could be interesting to know your thoughts beforehand
Well, with Verbeek we only ride for the win. He currently has won 9 classics so getting at least one win is the goal, I would be disappointed if he didn’t win one. The competition is very strong this year and the years are starting to show. However, he showed he can still perform at the start of the season so I’m holding on to this. A win in all 3 races is possible but very very difficult. The goal is podium at all races and at least one win. Then I can be happy.
Valter and the rest of the “ca-bronxitos”, rota, Pinin, Marino, kluivert, andujar...which one is your main rival? Do you know their strengths and weaknesses or they better worry about you?Of course they should worry about me. Verbeek holds the record in Lieja and Fleche and is the rider with the most victories at all 3 races. You don’t win Lieja 4 times by being nice. I think the main competitor will be Valter, if he goes for the Ardenas. He has proven last year he can beat Verbeek, his team is extremely strong of course. We will not be able to make one mistake.
Are you going on the attack or planning on waiting up to the finish line? How many riders do you think will make it to arrive together? Actually what track do you think is the most dangerous, 3 or 4? I am not sure what the game plan will be, and if I did I wouldn’t be telling it in this interview of course

What you have seen last seasons is that the group will be small, there aren’t many riders to sprint for the win. Verbeek just has to be one of them.
Is this going to be Verbeek's last Liege? Or will he be back again next season? It depends on how the season is going. This season Verbeek will be leader at every stage he will race and the goal will be to compete for the golden bike. If he manages to win I think he can retire gracefully. But maybe he wants to say farewell one last time. Right now I think this will be his last.
Who do you think are going to be Ardennes Capitanos in the future? Are you baking any good hills riders or are you moving into a different terrain? Many very strong riders are coming up the past few seasons. Pinin and Valter look like the next in line with Rota right behind them and Workman as a youngster.
I have won all the important hill races I could and with the silver bike and 3rd place in the GC I have to set my sights on the 2 biggest prizes: winning 1a and the golden bike. For this I have decided to go for GC guys or cobble hillers as my next focus. It will depend on next season. Right now I am figuring out all the important talent ratings while keep focusing on Verbeeks last big bang.
Have you been following the Mapei Cup competition? Do you like the format? You have a real chance to win it thanks to your 7th place in San Remo, are you going to pursue the final victory?I like it a lot. It reminds me of the world cup we had in previous versions of CFF. I think its very sad that jersey and trophee didn’t make it in CFF3. My heart lies with one day races, the classics, and having a competition for this is something I can only support. Although I must admit I did not know Verbeek won last season

Verbeek will be leader, so performing well will of course increase his chances in winning again.
